Data communication is the exchange of data between devices via the transmission medium. It could be via wired media such as twisted pair wire or coaxial cable, or wireless mediums like optical fibers or radio waves. The data must first be encoded, encapsulated, and transmitted by the device that is transmitting it, before being decoded and unencapsulated by the device receiving it. This is similar to the transmission of analog signals however, it is more complex and focuses on the exchange of binary data (1s and 0s).

Companies are making use of data communications to better share information with users who are scattered. This can help them improve efficiency within their business. For instance, an automobile manufacturer needed to communicate information to 6’000 untrained and dispersed dealers of spare parts to match demand with stock and reduce waste products. This required communication via a network not optimized for data transmission and use of a mobile application that was difficult for novice users to navigate.

Effective data communication begins with understanding the audience’s view of the data. It involves creating visualizations to enhance the story, providing context-based information, and articulating the data’s insights using a clear narrative. It also involves tailoring content to the specific audience according to their hierarchy, technical expertise and level of interest. It also means pushing the boundaries of creativity to make data communication more impactful and memorable.
